Kelis at Sydney's Hi-Fi

Back in 1999 I remember discovering Kelis with that killer jam "Caught Out There", with that massive chorus, I Hate You So Much Right now. This track was left of the set list however from her debut Kaleidoscope Kelis did throw together a mash up of some of her old faithful "Get Along with You" & "Good Stuff". For good measure she also threw in "Glow" from the 2003 Tasty.

The set featured a number of tunes from her latest release Food and even a few of the more dance orientated Flesh Tone.

Kelis has travelled a long musical road and showed us she can mix it with the Neptunes, David Guetta and TV on the Radio man Dave Sitek. She has featured on hits from Calvin Harris to Diddy & Timo Maas.

Kelis however live was spectacular. I saw her at the final Good Vibrations festival around the release of Flesh Tone. So last time in the Summer rain in February was a very different experience to this Splendour side show.

From the hits like Millionaire, Bounce, Milkshake, Jerk Ribs and Rumble Kelis did a really amazing best of set and showcased her range of tunes from over the years.

All her songs were mixed with the great band including horns and a divine back up singer. Kelis is at the top of her game and her latest album Food is truly one of the best releases of 2014. Rumble is one of the best songs of 2014 and I truly believe Kelis has real staying power. Looking back at 1999 to 15 years later and the new direction this fantastic vocalist has taken, everything feels right for Kelis, her fans love her, critics are in love with her new music and I think she sits well between Triple J and Double J playlists.

Australia seems to have fallen back in love with Kelis and this concert is truly one of the best gigs I have been to in a while. Her stage presence alone was enough to keep even the biggest Facebook, Twitter, Instagram fan offline for a while and experience the true wonders of Kelis.

Bold and red are my choices and hopes and dreams of who I believe above is the deserving winning of their respective MTV Awards.

Also dropping this week is the mid year ARIA report on what singles and albums are selling across this fine brown land. In regards to the singles:

Pharrell's tops the mid year list with his monster anthem from on of three of my album of the year nominated albums G I R L it's "Happy". Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne, John Legend, Sia & Rudimental all help round out a fairly amazing top 10. For sales that is.

Peking Duk from Canberra make a great impact in the top 20, whilst Coldplay, Avicii & London Grammar also make up the top 20.

The remaining top 50 we see newcomers Milky Chance. Mr Probz & ZHU in the top 30, whilst Calvin Harris, Aloe Blacc, Ed Sheeran, Eminem &Vance Joy all continue to prove popular throughout the years.

Albums wise the TV mini series thing for INXS did well for them their Very Best being the best selling album thus far of 2014. Coldplay, Pharrell, Lorde, Avicii, London Grammar and Arctic Monkeys also help round out the top ten.

Chet Faker (my second album of the year nod) joins Eminem, The Amity Affliction, The John Butler Trio, Rudimental and Ed Sheean in the top 20.

The remainder of the top 50 is made up of all your favourite (and my favourite artists) Rufus, Lana Del Rey, Flume, Skrillex, The Black Keys, Bliss N Eso, Sam Smith, Violent Soho, Daft Punk, my 2013 album of the year Haim's "Days are Gone", with 360 and Dan Sultan rounding up the top 50 albums in this nation for the first 6 months of 2014.

Looking at online lists on BLOG's, music sites etc Chet Faker seems a favourite for 2014, Beck also gets a return to form mention and Alt-J, Broods, Angus & Julia Stone, Hilltop Hoods, Nero, Kimbra and Vance Joy are all hotly anticipated.

Album of the Year Nomination #3 - Sia - 1000 Forms of Fear

All the way back on May 3rd I announced Chet Faker's record Built on Glass was announced as my second album of the year nomination and earlier in March Pharrell's monster album G I R L was the first album of the year nomination. So it's high time for the next nomination, yes it's Adelaide born SIA.

53,000,000 YouTube views later for the below lead single's official music video Sia really is taking 2014 by the horns.

This song will definitely feature very highly on my end of year Top 200 list. Sia has not only brought the game with this track but featured on the Hunger Games - Catching Fire soundtrack with Elastic Heart. This extra exposure and feature with the Weeknd and Diplo gave Sia a whole new reach.

The album however is terrific, on Saturday morning whilst cleaning my entire bomb site of a unit I listened to this start to finish and there was some old sounding Sia and some sexy new sounding Sia on this record.

She is one of the most respected song writers of our time and this album will really launch her career. I can only imagine how many ARIA awards are coming her way and potentially Global music awards too.

Her no face policy is also drawing a lot of publicity and we all know any publicity is good publicity.

Sia is a superstar and she joins two other musical stars Pharrell Williams and Chet Faker for this years Album of the Year. Come back Boxing Day and all will be revealed. It's a tight race so far but with the mid year hump just hit there will be plenty more nominations to come.

A full mid year report is also on the way.....
