Anything BUT an Album of the Year Nomination #1 - Drake - More Life

2016 there were two outstanding records, both a cut above everything else released. I am talking about Sia's This is Acting and Flume's Skin. The latter was my personal and this blogs record of the year.

This year however I am moving away from albums as such and moving to an award for a piece of music, a complete set of songs that is ANYTHING but an album and in case number one, a playlist.

Drake only a short time ago released a musical project or a playlist of 22 outstanding songs.

More Life follows on from Views, an exceptional release which featured his biggest hit to date One Dance.

More Life has featured the hits Fake Love, Passionfruit and the next single Free Smoke.

I am very proud of this piece of work from the Canadian national Drake, he is one of those acts who has grown and grown his fan base, treating them well with regular and solid releases and this latest effort is beyond brilliant.

The production is tight and the party nature and flavour over this trying March in Australia is the music we need now.

Well done Drake, in this a different (non) album of the year prize for 2017.

Sunday Spotlight: Soulwax

Radio Soulwax or just plain Soulwax, this trio from Belgium has been kicking around since 1995. On Friday their 8th studio record hit the shelves and I for one an excited.

A career spanning all the many years Soulwax have the boys from Belgium are onto a good thing.

Giving us the Mash Up, Radio Soulwax style the 2002 NY Times album of the year As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt.2, mash ups of everyone from Basement Jaxx to Dolly Parton became a thing.

Everyone knew Soulwax in the 2000's as 2manydjs and know these boys continue to break the electronic mould and give us more amazing new music.

Late night on Sundays nights with Soulwax, yes please...

Album of the Week, Featured Artists

This week's "musical project", "playlist" or just simply amazing 22 tracks from Toronto's finest Drake features a whole bunch of brilliant artists so let's shine the spotlight on some of the brilliant guests spots on his follow up to Views from 2016.

Ok so Giggs features on two of the awesome cuts from More Life so let's take a listen to one of his own tunes:

Jorga Smith, Drake and producer Black Coffee create easily one of the best moments from the playlist Get it Together. It makes me dance, it's cool and it's slick as fuck. Jorga Smith recently released the below tune.

All three of the Pick Up the Phone artists feature across Drake's playlist. Quavo and Travis Scott make a three way with Drake on Portland and Young Thug pops up on Ice Melts the second last cut on the hit list of new tunes from Drake.

2 Chainz have been everywhere lately and Drake's new release is no different they pop up on Sacrifices along with Young Thug.

Kanye West loves a feature and you can hear his vocals all across Glow.

Not Zayn (but how DOPE is his new song, farewell One Direction days, well done ZAYN, huge improvement on that Taylor/Fifty Shades track) PARTYNEXTDOOR are proving to be super in demand and even Drake wants fellow Canadian Jahron Anthony Brathwaite on his tune Since Way Back.

Last but not least, the highly impressive Sampha gives his best feature since his work on Solange's track Don't Touch My Hair. 4422 is one of the best on this impressive Playlist.

Sunday Spotlight: Milky Chance

German duo return with their second album coming out on St Patricks day. With the huge first single Cocoon acting charting higher in Australia (Number 10) than in their native Germany @ 34.

With their first record and single Stolen Dance smashing into the charts and onto the music scene all the way back in 2013. A lot has changed but Milky Chance still seem to have a decent sized following.

Cocoon has already gone platinum in Australia and with Blossom the title track and the second single now doing the rounds.

Let's listen to some German folk on a Sunday and chill it's Autumn in Australia.

Sunday Spotlight: Kingswood

Hailing from Melbourne, the first Sunday night Spotlight of 2017 is for KINGSWOOD.

After Hours, Close to Dawn is the new record that hit the shelves on Friday. It's their second and the follow up to the 2014 record Microscopic Wars.

The band have received one ARIA nomination in the past and my guess is this album will also feature in the Best Rock album category.

So shall we rock out this Sunday with some of Melbourne's finest rock tunes? Hell yes!
