Hottest Reaction to the Hottest 100 (2017)

After a lacklustre Ozzest 100 on Triple M yesterday it was time for the real Hottest 100 on Triple J. Poor Triple M the list they produced really was super fucking lame and Triple M whilst killing it's stable mate station 2DAY FM, they are really still considered Sydney's bogan magnet.

Now to the real Hottest 100 and I'm not talking another lame attempt for PR by Cory Bernardi. The South Australian hardcore God lover was busy like Triple M making an alternative Australian song list. Shame Darren Hayes and others were not impressed with him using their names for his latest PR stunt.

So Triple J had January 27 all to themselves, after some fake lists, the Warm Tuna's social analysing skills and book maker having their say, it was time finally for Kendrick Lamar to take out number one.

Alongside Lorde, clearly one of the biggest songs of 2017 and maybe the last five years (with Flume of course), Humble is a 100% hit! Wide reaching, a commercial crossover single for the artist and a huge 4 songs in total in the list. Will any make tomorrow's 200-101.

I always love the 200-101 list, and I really hope Kelela makes it. Also I really want some of my other votes to make it, like SZA, Yaeji, Vince Staples, Mura Musa & Lana Del Rey.

The list was not super surprising with Kendrick a clear favourite, Gang of Youths, tripped to do very well and Lorde's Green Light always going to make an impact.

I was happy Baker Boy smashed it, PNAU's Go Bang was a summer dark horse which did make an impact and Snakehips and MO totally deserved to make it in, just making it in @ #100.

The Hottest 100 was making news for months ahead of the day for all the wrong reasons, the change the date thing was a good move from ABC/Triple J management and unfortunately conservatives just need to move the fuck on. Triple J has always been about music and this year (well last year, 2017) has been a good year for music, so it is a great end to 2017 with Kendrick Lamar, literally being crowned KING!

Kendrick Lamar has a promising 2018 working on the Black Panther soundtrack and I do believe when DAMN was released he did tease he had more new music ready to roll. Fingers crossed.

So 2017 ends, Triple J will roll out 200-101 tomorrow and this whole Hottest 100 weekend is a great idea and guess what, the sky did not fall on Friday when they exclusively played outstanding new and old Australian music.

Tomorrow Double J will also go back to 1997 to replay the Hottest 100 in full. Fantastic.

So all round Triple J 10/10 in my eyes even though I am 14 years older than the average 21 voter, I think full marks go to you lot this year. Well done.

Out on the Shelves... NOW! - Digital Single Edition

Slightly pop focused this week here are some of the new singles doing the rounds...

Artists can not rest for a minute these days the world of new music, streaming services, digital releases and digital radio makes music move, FAST!

So without further crap, Sarah Blasko is back with another taste from her new record, maybe a little bit more Double J, than Triple J these days, Sarah Blasko is still an iconic Australian artist who will most likely not get played on Triple M's horrid Ozzest 100. What fuck turd came up with that idea?

More pop than Blasko but still local, it's new music from Kylie, is it any good? That's up to you? At least Mardi Gras is just around the corner, will Kylie share the stage with Cher for the 40th anniversary?

I did not like their last single with James Arthur and at a first listen I am not sold on this star studded release, These Days. It's up to you though, is this a winning return to form or just another radio friendly jam?

Local pop music is good right now, but unlikely to make Triple M's provocative Australian playlist, 22 year old Troye Sivan continues his dream run for 2018. My My My is already a smash and another contender for this year's Mardi Gras.

His first single from his incoming solo record had mixed responses from critics and fans a like, but will JT please the masses with Supplies?

After pushing back her album release till April 20 Kimbra is back with another taste, Human. Will the wait for the album be worth it? Kimbra thinks so and I do too, it's been a while since Kimbra has had a big hit and I hope for her sake this album gets her the acclaim the Somebody That You Used to Know singer deserves.

Another Australian themed, racism and conservative free Summer music list is back tomorrow, it's time to check in with the Australian Albums of 2017. No EP's allowed sorry Dean Lewis and Amy Shark.

According to the end of year ARIA Charts, Australians Are..

Boring as FUCK!

Yes that is right Ed Sheeran number one album and single, oh please wake me up after that horrid Galway Girl song is over. Even that horrid single made it as the 7th highest selling song of 2017, WTF? Thank god the real Hottest 100 is coming soon.

Or if you can't wait for the Hottest 100, I have posted two lists, the songs that were the top 100 and then the next 100.

Of course Kendrick Lamar was number one, he had a far superior and more groundbreaking year than Ed Sheeran. Even yesterday he dropped new music with fellow 2017 trailblazer SZA.

It's called All the Stars and will be featured on the new Black Panther soundtrack. Finally Marvel are pairing their blockbusting movies up with equally blockbusting music.

HUMBLE. does manage to make the end of year top 10 singles on ARIA at number 8, but surely it's a better, more important song than that daggy Galway Girl song. Honestly I thought that song was reserved for drunk backpackers and bogans watching the recent Stan hit Romper Stomper thinking it is a documentary.

The top 5 albums is a total snore fest Ed Sheeran, Pink, Taylor "tickets not selling so" Swift, Adele and a Disney soundtrack. Fucking hell, anyone would think we are the most white nation around. Are we even multicultural with titles like Pink's Beautiful Trauma. Usually hearing Pink's music does leave me in a state of trauma, but Australia when will we tire of her same, same formula for songs.

I honestly preferred her urban edge on her debut record. I guess the vast majority of punters didn't so the record company intervened.

It's not all bleak on the album front, unless of course if you are an Australian artist. Paul Kelly's adult contemporary record is the highest entry at 14. With the following Australian "artists" following Jessica Mauboy (TV soundtrack to a now cancelled series), John Farnham and Livy's tired old Christmas record, Keith Suburban, INXS (Best of), Tina Macarena and the list goes all the way down to The Wiggles. Pretty sad for local's trying to make it in their own country.

Australia turned out loads of good music last year, but it seems to mostly be absent from these charts.

Oh well there is always 2018 to support a local artist. So maybe in 2018 Australia let's try and discover some new, boundary pushing music or even a new favourite local act? Sound good?

Ok, enough of the bleak review for now, I will be back maybe tomorrow or Monday with the years first feature album!

See you then, stay warm USA readers, stay cool Australian readers, and for those that don't believe in climate change, maybe time to go to a sandpit and burrow your head under the sand.
