(Pre) Friday Flash(back)

The Cruel Sea are one of the reasons last year I started the Friday Flash(back).

The Australian indie rock band from Sydney, New South Wales, formed in late 1987.

Originally an instrumental band, they became more popular when fronted by vocalist Tex Perkins (also Beasts of Bourbon). For the majority of the band's tenure, the band has featured Jim Elliott on drums, Ken Gormly on bass guitar, Dan Rumour on guitar and James Cruickshank on guitar and keyboards.

Between 1990 and 2001, the band released six studio albums – three of which (1991's This Is Not the Way Home, 1993's The Honeymoon Is Over and 1995's Three Legged Dog) were certified platinum by ARIA.

The band are also known for their music having featured on television, such as Better Get a Lawyer soundtracking an RTA ad targeting drink driving, & Reckless Eyeballin' – an instrumental track from their debut album Down Below – becoming the theme of Australian TV police drama Blue Heelers.

The band has won eight ARIA Music Awards, including five in 1994 for work associated with The Honeymoon Is Over.

Last Friday Tex Perkins and crew released their seventh studio record, Straight Into the Sun. Their first since the 2001 release, Where There's Smoke.

That's a long time between drinks. This will be the last (Pre) Friday Flash(back), before my holidays. Cherry blossoms and Japan, here I come!

For the remaining Friday Flash(back) for season one of 2025 posts, head over to my other blog. Posts will be limited and there will be no (Pre) Friday Flash(back), just the Friday posts. However there are some damn fine acts on the way, with season two returning, mid-year.

Until then, bye!

It's that time of the year...

Me going on holidays! So that means...

From next Friday, there will be limited posts, here. Feature record posts/final Friday Flash(back) for season one of 2025, can be found HERE

For now, did you missed this great record that came out of the Steel City? Recency Bias is the debut album from Rum Jungle.

The four-piece deliver some surf rock, indie guitars and roadtripping anthems, which is perfect for a weekend listen.

(Pre) Friday Flash(back)

Miami Horror, the Aussie electronic music duo Melbourne, Victoria.

Benjamin Plant, the producer and DJ, formed Miami Horror initially as a solo project. In addition to Plant, the band features Daniel Whitechurch (keyboards), and currently Rhythm Luna (drums), while featuring different vocalists and guitar players including Reva Devito (vocals), TC Milan of Crush Club (vocals), Nicolas Mulhall of Queen Magic (guitar), and Tom Frazer (guitar).

Miami Horror take influence from dance and rock artists of the 1970s and 1980s such as Prince, New Order, Todd Rundgren, and Pink Floyd, combining it with modern production techniques from styles such as house and pop music.

Plant debuted in the music scene with his EP Bravado, released in 2008. The debut album Illumination was released in 2010 and debuted at Number 10 on the Australian Chart, which featured collaborations with Josh Moriarty and Daniel Whitechurch, along with features from Neon Indian and Kimbra, while their second more collaborative album, All Possible Futures, in 2015.

A second EP titled The Shapes followed in 2017 as a conceptual effort to explore a new sound. Additionally, they have remixed songs from other artists such as Gorillaz, PNAU, Ratatat, & Phantogram, among others.

Last Friday the long awaited third album dropped, We Always Had Tomorrow, so pass by and stream it here tomorrow.

I am super excited to have new music from a group I remember from my 2008 hey day! Stream/view some hits and memories below.
