Sunday Spotlight: Lana Del Rey

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant AKA Lana Del Rey, has just given us her eighth studio album, Blue Banisters. On Friday we were given Del Rey's second album of 2021, following Chemtrails over the Country Club earlier in the year.

Lana's music is noted for its stylized, cinematic quality and exploration of themes of sadness, tragic romance, glamor, and melancholia, containing many references to pop culture, particularly 1950s and 1960s Americana.

Raised in upstate New York, Del Rey moved to New York City in 2005 to begin her music career.

Following numerous projects, including her self-titled debut studio album, Del Rey's breakthrough came with the viral success of her debut single Video Games in 2011.

Lana's major label debut, Born to Die was released in 2012. The album was an international success spawning the singles, Summertime Sadness, Blue Jeans & Born to Die.

Following Born to Die, Del Rey released the EP Paradise in 2012. In 2013, Del Rey ventured into film, writing and starring in the music short film Tropico; she also released Young and Beautiful as the lead single for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.

Del Rey released her third album, Ultraviolence in 2014 to critical success.

Giving us tracks like West Coast, then came Honeymoon in 2015 and Lust for Life in 2017.

Her sixth album, Norman Fucking Rockwell! arrived in 2019. It received widespread critical acclaim and two Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

In 2019, Del Rey released the singles Doin' Time & Don't Call Me Angel. The latter being a collaboration with Ariana Grande & Miley Cyrus for the soundtrack of the Charlie's Angels reboot.

Lana's follow-up releases included the spoken word album and poetry collection, Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass in 2020.

Her accolades include two Brit Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, a Satellite Award, nine GAFFA Awards, six Grammy Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination.

So if you have been living under a rock, it's time to discover Lana Del Rey as part of the Sunday Spotlight legends series. Good night Australia
