(Pre) Friday Flash(back)

Christine Anu gained popularity with the cover song release of the Warumpi Band's song My Island Home, along with being nominated for 17 ARIA Awards. Not only a singer, Anu has also had an acting career in film, stage and television.

She appeared in Dating the Enemy, an Aussie film starring Guy Pearce and Claudia Karvan, while also appearing in the musical, Little Shop of Horrors also in 1996.

Anu's stage career developed with a starring role in the original Australian production of Rent in 1998 and 1999.

Anu was offered a role in a Broadway production of this musical but had to decline due to commitments in recording her second album. Her links with Baz Luhrmann led to him offering her a part in Moulin Rouge!.

In 2003, she appeared as Kali in The Matrix Reloaded and played the character on the video game Enter the Matrix.

Back in lockdown, 2020, Anu was revealed to be the 'Goldfish' in the second season of The Masked Singer Australia and was the third contestant unmasked, placing 10th overall.

Ahead of tomorrow's pre-look at her new record, get some classics from Anu below. Big Friday Flash(back) next week!

(Pre) Friday Flash(back)

Scotland's finest, Travis are tomorrow's Friday Flash(back). So getting in early, the Glasgow group formed in 1990.

Made up of Fran Healy (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Dougie Payne (bass guitar, backing vocals), Andy Dunlop (lead guitar, banjo, backing vocals) and Neil Primrose (drums, percussion).

The band's name comes from the character Travis Henderson (played by Harry Dean Stanton) from the film Paris, Texas (1984).

Travis released their debut album, Good Feeling in 1997, to moderate success where it debuted at number nine on the UK Albums Chart & was later awarded a silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in January 2000.

The band gained greater success with their second album in 1999, The Man Who, which spent nine weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, totalling 134 weeks in the top 100 of the chart.

In 2003, The Man Who was certified 9× platinum by the BPI, representing sales of over 2.68 million in the UK alone.

Following this success, the band released their third effort, The Invisible Band (2001) album. The Invisible Band went on to match the success found with their previous album, where it debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and spent a total of four weeks at the top spot, fifteen weeks in the top ten, and a total of fifty-five weeks in the top 100 chart, as well as peaking at thirty-nine on the US Billboard 200 album chart, spending a duration of seven weeks in the Billboard 200 chart.

A year following the release of The Invisible Band, the BPI awarded Travis with a 4× platinum certification for the album.

The band's subsequent discography has included studio albums 12 Memories (2003), The Boy with No Name (2007), Ode to J. Smith (2008), Where You Stand (2013), Everything at Once (2016) and 10 Songs (2020). In 2004, the band released their first greatest hits album, Singles, which spent nineteen weeks in the top 100 of the UK albums chart.

Travis have twice been awarded best band at the Brit Awards and were awarded the NME Artist of the Year award at their 2000 ceremony, and in 2016 were honoured at the Scottish Music Awards for their outstanding contribution to music.

The band are widely said by the media to have paved the way for other bands such as Coldplay to go on to achieve worldwide success throughout the 2000s, particularly with the success of The Man Who.

Craft Recordings celebrated the 20th anniversary of Travis's breakthrough year with two simultaneous releases: Live at Glastonbury '99, plus expanded editions of The Man Who – both of which were released on 21 June 2019.

On 20 March 2024, Travis debuted the single, Gaslight, and announced their tenth studio album, L.A. Times, which was released last Friday.

The album was produced by Tony Hoffer and written by Fran Healy in his studio on the edge of Skid Row, Los Angeles.

The cover of the album is a photograph of the band in Los Angeles taken by Stefan Ruiz, who also took photographs for the covers of previous albums The Man Who, The Invisible Band and The Boy with No Name.

The band also announced they would be supporting the Killers on their seventeen date Ireland and UK tour in mid-2024.

(Pre) Friday Flash(back)

Kasabian, the English rock band who formed in Leicester in 1997 by lead vocalist Tom Meighan, guitarist and second vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, guitarist Chris Karloff and bassist Chris Edwards. Drummer Ian Matthews joined in 2004.

Karloff left the band in 2006 and founded a new band called Black Onassis. Jay Mehler joined as touring lead guitarist in 2006, leaving for Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye in 2013, to be replaced by Tim Carter, who later became a full-time band member in 2021.

Meighan left the band in July 2020, with Pizzorno stepping up as full-time lead vocalist.

The English band's music is often described as indie rock, or maybe a touch of Brit-pop.

Kasabian has released eight studio albums. With the self titled debut, Kasabian in 2004, Empire in 2006, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum in 2009, two years later with Velociraptor! in 2011, 48:13 in 2014, For Crying Out Loud in 2017, in The Alchemist's Euphoria in 2022 and finally last Friday, Happenings.

The band's music has been described as a mix of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream with the swagger of Oasis.

Their music has won them several awards and recognition in the media, including a Brit Award in 2010 for Best British Group. Their live performances are also highly admired. Of of their most notable of which was their appearance as headliners at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival.

Kasabian announced the latest record, Happenings on early December last year.

Inspired by gigs of 1960s psychedelic bands, it was said to be a joyous album filled with big tunes. The band started recording while they were touring their previous record The Alchemist's Euphoria in late 2022. The album's release coincided with their homecoming headline show at Victoria Park, Leicester last Saturday.

Missy Higgins

Melissa Morrison Higgins or as she is known in the music biz as Missy Higgins, is an Australian singer-songwriter/musician and most importantly ICON!

I was lucky enough to see her at Sydney's brilliant new venue, the ICC in Darling Harbour. The area close by Darling Quarter behind China Town is honestly buzzing. This could be the buzz area of the CBD. Well done to all invovled.

Now to Missy. Playing at a venue in a busy, vibe of a precinct sets you up for a good night. Missy gave her ageing fans (that is me born a year earlier than Missy in 1982) a two act concert. How good. It was almost like a theatre show. With Missy completely engaging with the crowd for close to three hours. With a wee break in the middle.

Act One we heard new shows from the upcoming record, The Second Act. Act Two, we got the entire number-one debut album, The Sound of White from 2004.

Missy has given us other classic albums like On a Clear Night (2007), The Ol' Razzle Dazzle (2012), and Oz (2014).

Missy's new album is also going to be a heartbreaking record. With her divorce finalised, her two kids growing up, Missy told of the night of her break up. NYE 2021. You can view the clip of her playing live on the ABC the night of said break up.

The Sound of White is completely one of the most iconic Australian albums. With Scar, The Special Two, the title track, Ten Days and Triple J winning tune All for Believing all highlights from this incredible debut album.

Missy was so warm, so full of great stories. So on a high from a sold out 6,000 or more music lovers all loving the hits and memories. From Where I Stood to Tim Minchin joining on stage for Carry You from the Foxtel series, Upright.

This was honestly a great night out with live music in the middle of Winter 2024.

Higgins's sixth studio album, The Second Act will land early September. I for one am excited. She is totally a prime candidate for my new blog series, Friday Flash(back). So watch this space. For now Missy Higgins is 100% a live highlight for 2024 for me. That said I have seen, P!nk, Taylor Swift, Fred Again, Rudimental, Becky Hill, so yeah its been a good year for live music.

Next month I will see Northeast Party House. Hopefully later in the year, I will see the homecoming show for Confidence Man. Live music, yep, I love it!

(Pre) Friday Flash(back)

Kate Marie Nash or simply Kate Nash. Is not only a singer-songwriter, she is also an actress. Nash has appeared in films such as the drama Greetings from Tim Buckley in 2012, the comedy Powder Room in 2013, & also in 2013, the comedy-drama Syrup.

She played Rhonda "Britannica" Richardson in the Netflix comedy-drama series GLOW from 2017–2019.

Nash launched her music career in 2005. Her 2007 single Foundations became a hit and brought her to public attention in the UK and Australia getting play on Triple J.

I remember buying her debut CD (yes physical CD), Made of Bricks. It peaked at number one in the UK, whilst having moderate international success. Nash subsequently won the award for Best British Female Artist at the 2008 Brit Awards.

Her second studio album, My Best Friend Is You, was released in 2010 and reached the top 10 in the UK and Germany.

After her departure from a major label, Nash self-released her third studio album, Girl Talk, in 2013, but it failed to match the commercial success of her previous records. Her fourth and most recent studio album, Yesterday Was Forever, was also released independently in 2018, funded by her fans via a Kickstarter campaign.

Following the cancellation of GLOW before its fourth season could be completed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nash launched a Patreon page to connect with her fans more directly.

Nash continued working on her fifth studio album, partially inspired by Irish traditional music. In 2021, she released a new single, Misery, followed by Horsie the same year.

The following year, she released the single Imperfect written for the American Netflix series The Baby-Sitters Club, and went on a European tour.

In August, she released a new single, Wasteman, with a music video starring Danny Dyer. In October, the musical Only Gold had its world premiere at the MCC Theater in New York City, featuring score by Nash and book by Andy Blankenbuehler and Ted Malawer.

Her fifth studio album, 9 Sad Symphonies, was confirmed as completed and set for release in 2023, but will eventually be released last month, after Nash had signed with the independent label Kill Rock Stars.

So let's take a trip down memory lane. This is why I love the Friday Flash(back) series. Rediscovering tracks, albums I grew up with in the glory years of buying CD's from JB Hi-Fi.
