Dizzee Rascal and Groovin' the Moo

This week it was announced that sir Dizzee Rascal had to cancel a show at Sydney's iconic Enmore Theatre, turns out ticket sales didn't seem to be right and after seeing him there a few years back to a fairly full room it does make me wonder if his album the Fifth was really the right move.

However it flips over to Saturday on the Anzac Day long weekend and the Groovin the Moo festival takes over Maitland Showground, mud, music and limited clothes, it can only be the end of the Australian Festival season.

After attending the hip Laneway Festival, the drug fest otherwise known as Future Music Festival, it was time to get regional and by all accounts, this had the best set up and was super smooth entering and getting around.

Also to mention the Yum Cha and Calamari and Chips was really yum.

Next Architecture in Helsinki commence on the main stage with fluro outfits, a new record under their belts and one of their best hits in years "I Might Survive". The album has had luke warm reviews to say the least but if the crowd at Maitland had anything to say, they were hit makers and true champions of the Australian music scene.

The set was like a best of with "That Beep", "Contact High", "Heart it Races" and more getting great reactions from the crowd.

Karnivool, the Naked & Famous and The Jezabels all warmed up the stage before the one and only Dizzee Rascal truly brought his very own best of party. Going way back to the start of his career with the terrific Boy in da Corner record.

Dizzee gave the crowd a real treat from his second number and personally one of my favourite tracks "Fix Up Look Sharp" into the highlight from his fifth album (aptly titled The Fifth) "I Don't Need a Reason", back to some old school then "Jus' a Rascal" "I Luv U". His latest album track "We Don't Play around" featuring the over played Jessie J, fell a wee bit flat, showing me the last album was a bit of a detour from his previous success.

It came back to the hits with "Dance wiv Me" and "Holiday". "Bassline Junkie" went nuts while "Something Really Bad" went off (I think the alcohol was well and truly flowing by then) and then a rare live showing of "You've Got the Dirtee Love".

He came back and did an encore including the global smash "Bonkers".

I left hearing this and from the Moolin Rogue tent Flume's other project What So Not, playing his recent remix of Lorde's "Tennis Court".

I again missed my party starters of 2013 Disclosure, however it's a goal one day, yes one day (hopefully sooner rather than later) that I will get to see Disclosure live.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised one by how well organised the festival was, two by the few bands I heard the majority of their sets making their sets all about the hits, no fillers all killers and three a regional crowd really kills it.

At the end of the Festival season I say bring on the announcements for the upcoming festivals, which ones will survive, which ones will collapse in a heap? Definitely long live the Moo as I think this festival definitely has a lot more life in in yet....

Album of the Year 2014 - Next Nomination

There have been some cracking album releases in April and just around Easter, so I think it's high time for another Album of the Year nomination to hit soon. So here are some contenders which I might throw up in the air for the Album of the Year.

Chet Faker's debut is finally here and it's pretty spesh. Will this be the first Australian Album of the Year nomination for 2014?

Fresh from her SXSW food truck and tour Kelis's Food album is delicious. "Jerk Ribs" and "Rumble" have keep me happy with this lovely ladies 2014 musical comeback. Kelis is definitely no one trick pony. Yes you may trick her once, but definitely not twice.

It's been years in the making but finally it's here, Duck Sauce have delivered a near perfect dance record that will get many to the dance floors this long cold and miserable winter.

Skrillex just dropped Recess out of nowhere, any good? Check with those Dubstep kids and the rave caves?

Out on the Shelves.... Now (One Week till Easter)

Friday saw some strong releases hit the shelves pre Easter week (yes folks this week is a four day working week). I have to say though the Good Friday releases are AMAZING! I can't wait to talk that up during the week.

In the meantime after my absence from blogging this week (sorry) these albums dropped on iTunes and in-store on Friday.

Chet Faker after a couple of EP's, a lot of Flume love and a lot of recognition amongst Triple J listeners here comes his debut.

Local crew Saskwatch also dropped a new disc on Friday:

And finally one half of the amazing and talented Everything but the Girl, Ben Watt returns with his first solo record in decades. I really do wish Everything but the Girl were still active. They really did some killer tunes back in the day.

A new countdown will be posted later on potentially with a new number one tune! And maybe even a local number one!

Groovin' the Moo - This Month

The sell out regional tour just gets bigger and bigger and to be honest I haven't hit up Maitland since Dogbite in the late 90's a festival no longer around. I remember seeing Eskimo Joe and other awesome Aussie acts in their 90's prime.

Now Groovin the Moo this year features the Aussie hip hop name I hear everywhere I go these days ALL DAY, my favourite Aussie pop icons ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI will strut their stuff and material from their new record, it's damn fine if you haven't heard any of it.

Joining the A artists, the boys who archived my first Party Starter Album of 2013, DISCLOSURE, after re-working their hit "F For You" with Mary J Blige, the boys will bring it alongside ILLY (keeping the Aussie Hip Hop quote high), Sydney folks THE JEZABELS and Brisbane crew THE JUNGLE GIANTS.

The sheer power of KARNIVOOL & KINGSWOOD will keep the rock fans happy whilst Triple J Unearthed favourite THE KITE STRING TANGLE will keep lovers of new music excited.

LOON LAKE will bring the indie pop joining forces with NZ pop favourites THE NAKED AND FAMOUS. How many ads will feature the latest Naked & Famous songs.

PEKING DUK, THE PRESETS & ROBERT DELONG will all bring the dance both from here and abroad, so dust off those dancing shoes please.

THUNDAMENTALS will bring the noise from Sydney's Blue Mountains and VANCE JOY will deliver that number one hit from the Hottest 100 of 2013. VIOLENT SOHO & Flume's other project WHAT SO NOT round off a damn decent line up, full review coming at the end of April and hopefully I will have some pictures to accompany me.

Here is just a wee taste of what you can expect.

Out on the Shelves.... This Friday, Easter (Instead of eggs give music this Easter) in Two Weeks

Ball Park Music return with this week's feature album on Triple J. The Brisbane crew's new release is their third record and they have come a long way since early plays on Triple J.

RAC has remixed heaps of folk and he is about to drop Part 2 of his Strangers effort.

Dan Sultan is also back with Blackbird, Dan's past record was a real favourite of mine, Get Out While You Can featured some great Aussie rock and if the lead single from this disc "Under Your Skin" is anything to go by this album is going to be a cracker.
