Sunday Spotlight: Ball Park Music

The Sunday Spotlight returns for another great, iconic Australian group, this week, its Brisbane's Ball Park Music. The group just released their sixth self titled record as well as covering Radiohead on Triple J's Like a Version.

Ball Park Music came onto the scene with iFly back in 2010. A huge radio hit on Triple J. Their debut album Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs followed featuring hits and sing a longs like Rich People Are Stupid, It's Nice to Be Alive, Literally Baby and more. Next came Museum featuring more indie favourites then Puddinghead in 2014 followed by Every Night The Same Dream & Good Mood.

That sees us up until 2020 by which time the five piece had released Spark Up!, Day & Age and Cherub. By October we were ready for a full length release.

The album was featured this week on Triple J whilst already going well on the iTunes album chart.

Ball Park Music won the J Awards of 2011 for Unearthed Artist of the Year whilst also being nominated that same year for Australian Album of the Year. In 2014 they were also nominated for the same award with Puddinghead.

The group are a favourite on the tour and festival scene whilst their growing back catalogue is loaded with choice sing-a-longs.

Sam Cromack , Jennifer Boyce, Paul Furness, and twins Dean Hanson and Daniel Hanson make up Ball Park Music. So why not make Sunday your day for discovering Brisbane's favourite indie five piece.

Until next week!

Sunday Spotlight: Julia Jacklin

Julia Jacklin used to be from Sydney, now Jacklin (like a lot of people in the arts) call Melbourne home.

Jacklin has released two studio albums, Don't Let the Kids Win (2016) and Crushing (2019) and recently Julia gave us one of my favourite recording types, a Double A side, Cry & to Perth, before the border closes.

Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes, Ryan K Brennan, and Tom Stephens also make up Phantastic Ferniture. The indie kids who gave is the awesome hit, Fuckin 'n' Rollin. As well as a self-titled album in 2018.

I am not sure why it has take till the dumpster fire year of 2020 for me to shine the spotlight on Julia Jacklin? But it is ARIA nominations week after all where Jacklin has been nominated 8 times. Whilst also winning 2 AIR Awards.

So this Sunday evening (later than usual posting time) lets jump into some classy local indie. Until next week, stay safe, stay sane and most importantly keep enjoying good, local Australian music.

Sunday Spotlight: Róisín Murphy

Daylight Savings is here with the Sunday Spotlight returning for everyone's favourite, Róisín Murphy.

Everyone knows and loves Murphy from her days at the front of Moloko. Sing it Back is the ultimate party starter whilst their tunes Time is Now, The Flipside, Fun for Me and Familiar Feeling are timeless pop gems.

However Murphy has had her own solo gems like You Know Me Better, Mommas Place, Overpowered and Let Me Know. I was lucky enough to see Murphy play some of these hits live at Sydney's Metro Theatre.

So today on the return and almost one of the last Sunday Spotlights for 2020, let's celebrate, dance, fun and pop. 2020 has been one hell of a wild ride, so its time to be carefree and embrace fun.

Coming in December will be a full review of all the bests of 2020, including male and female artists as well as the biggest tunes of Spring 2020.

Until then let's get into some Róisín Murphy with a touch of Moloko.
