Sunday Spotlight: Childish Gambino

Oh mid 2018, that was the last time I featured Childish Gambino for a Sunday Spotlight. Life was chilled, we could go the movies, not social distance and get up close and personal whilst seeing Childish Gambino in concert. Live, not some Instagram story gig.

However one thing we are still waiting on from Donald Glover since May 2018 is Atlanta season three. So that is apparently coming in 2021! Yes that is right, 2021. Although good news is their will be two seasons, although with the third season, it's also been renewed for a fourth.

3.15.20 is the fourth studio album which surprisingly appeared online, then was deleted and then reappeared for an offical release of March 22nd 2020. As far as years go 2020 is weird, so releasing an album, deleting and then releasing is far from the most weird thing of 2020 thus far.

So the album features a few guests, whilst also getting critics excited. Glover also gave life to Simba for the 2019 Disney remake.

Childish Gambino is the kind of artist I am happy to feature every two years as his style continues to evolve whilst he puts himself into so many other projects.

Guava Island was also one of my favourite projects Glover has worked on over the past two years. Featuring his monster smash This is America and the brilliant Summertime Magic.

Until next week...

Sunday Spotlight, on Saturday*: Grouplove

From LA it's Grouplove, their fourth album Healer was released on Friday, following their 2016 Big Mess.

I first heard me some Grouplove with the single Tongue Tied back in 2011. Oh 2011, those were much easier times, less fear and panic. You could even get toilet paper at your local Aldi.

Grouplove are five piece Hannah Hooper, Chris Zucconi, Andrew Wessen, Daniel Gleason and
Benjamin Homola.

The groups biggest song to date in Australia is still Tongue Tied from their 2011 debut, Never Trust a Happy Song, the single went on to sell over 35,000 copies. The album reached number 21 in Australia whilst selling over 80,000 in the USA.

Grouplove are set to return to Australia to play Splendour in the Grass, so exciting! Hoping the event does still go ahead for all the Byron Bay kids.

Grouplove continuing the give us some indie vibes. So take in their new album Healer below or go back to a favourite classic cut.

* Posted a day early due to being on board a cruise, YASS! Next week a very special Sunday Spotlight returns to Sunday, stay tuned and Ocean Grove will be your local feature album all next week. Cheers.

Sunday Spotlight: Slowly Slowly

Hailing from Melbourne, it's our second Sunday Spotlight for 2020, featuring our second all Australian feature, Slowly Slowly.

Following the big tune Jellyfish, Safety Switch and the title track, Slowly Slowly recently released their third studio record, Race Car Blues.

It debuted last night at number seven, the second Australian album in the top 50, only behind Tame Impala.

I discovered Slowly Slowly through Triple J Unearthed with their tune Ten Leaf Clover. The four piece basically exploded since then. Heading into Triple J to perform a Like a Version, making the Hottest 100 and touring all around the place.

Since 2015 we have been learning a lot about this outstanding pop rock/indie rock group from Melbourne. Here is hoping to many more anthems from the crew. Anyway it's Sunday discover some new music right now!
