Sunday Spotlight: Album of the Year Nomination - 2021 Special

It's the finale for the Sunday Spotlight (for now). So following a huge week of the ARIA Awards this week. Music is on the comeback. Live music along with huge albums 7 artists have shared with us this year.

It's sad to say so long to the Sunday Spotlight however it's almost summer (who would believe that if you live in Sydney) so the Summer Music Lists are on their way back. Also 2022 is just around the corner!

So to the seven big nominations for the Album of the Year Nomination for 2021.

Amy Shark, where do I begin. It's been a huge year for Shark. That massive duet with Keith Urban, a song on her second record, Cry Forever named Amy Shark along with millions of streams and views online.

Olivia Rodrigo released her debut album earlier this year. It was a certified hit. With multiple singles, good 4 u, drivers license, traitor, deja vu and more. This debut album was one for the record books.

We finally got a debut record from Tones and I. Songs like Fly Away and Cloudy Day have been monster smash hits in 2021. Fly Away was also used on that highly emotional Qantas ad.

Billie Eilish follows Amy Shark, returning with a HUGE second record. Happier than Ever didn't pack as big a punch as her debut (a former album of the year) When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? but her fans still lapped it up.

A few versions later the Kid Laroi's Fuck Love 3: Over You has featured some (if not the biggest song of 2021) biggest songs of 2021. Stay with Justin Bieber has been a wild ride. Without You and So Done were also massive in 2020/2021.

Doja Cat's Planet Her is such a bold release. I'm so in love with this record. From the opener Woman to hits like Need to Know, You Right, Kiss Me More and Ain't Shit. This album was a monster release from the queen herself, Doja Cat.

Lil Nas X marks the seventh (possibly finale) Album of the Year Nomination for 2021. This album (like Tones and I) was the highly anticipated debut record, from the Old Town Road guy. This album full of hype, energy and love is incredible. I am such a fan. You hear the songs on Triple J or commercial radio. Montero is an epic release.

So which album will score the Album of the Year for 2021. Find out next month. For now let's celebrate these records with some choice cuts. Until tomorrow. Keep Calm.

Sunday Spotlight: Adele

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins or simply known to millions of adoring fans as Adele. Giving us album her fourth album, 30 on Friday. This follows three huge records. Back in 2015 I featured Adele in this very Sunday segement.

With sales of over 120 million records (and growing by the minute!), her debut album, 19, was released in 2008, spawning the UK top-five singles Chasing Pavements & Make You Feel My Love.

19 was certified 8× platinum in the UK and triple platinum in the US.

Adele released her second studio album, 21, in 2011. It became the world's best-selling album of the 21st century, with sales of over 31 million copies. It was certified 17× platinum in the UK & Diamond in the US.

Adele was the first female artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to have three simultaneous top-ten singles as a lead artist, with Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You & Set Fire to the Rain, all of which also topped the chart.

The album received a record-tying six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and the Brit Award for British Album of the Year.

In 2012, Adele released Skyfall, a soundtrack single for the James Bond film of the same name, which won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

Adele's third studio album, 25, was released in 2015 and became the year's best-selling album and broke first-week sales records in the UK and US. 25 was her second album to be certified Diamond in the US and earned her five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and four Brit Awards, including British Album of the Year.

Hello became the first song in the US to sell over one million digital copies within a week of its release.

Adele's accolades include fifteen Grammy Awards and nine Brit Awards. In 2011, 2012, and 2016, Billboard named her Artist of the Year.

Her third tour saw her break attendance records globally, including in the UK, Australia, and the US, and her album 21 has been listed in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020).

Adele is the second last Sunday Spotlight (for now) as we prepare to welcome the Summer Music Lists again really soon. You wouldn't think it on a wet spring Sunday afternoon summer was just around the corner.

See you next week for a farewell (of sorts) to the Sunday Spotlight.

Saturday Spotlight: Kylie

Kylie Ann Minogue also known mononymously as Kylie has recently given us the Disco: Guest List Edition. Featuring my personal favourites like Years & Years, Jessie Ware, Dua Lipa and more. The re-release also features a number of tasty remixes. Including a remix by the extremely amazing Purple Disco Machine.

Kylie is the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time, having sold over 70 million records worldwide. Whilst taking home 17 ARIA Music Awards. Speaking of the ARIA's are just around the corner.

Getting her start in Neighbours, Minoque gained prominence as a recording artist in the late 1980s.

In the 1990s, she had amassed several top ten singles in the UK and Australia, including I Should Be So Lucky, The Loco-Motion, Hand on Your Heart & Better the Devil You Know.

Taking more creative control over her music, Minogue signed with Deconstruction Records in 1993 and released Kylie Minogue (1994) and Impossible Princess (1997), both of which received positive reviews.

Kylie headed back to the with 2000's Light Years record. Giving us number-one hits Spinning Around & On a Night Like This.

Fever in 2001, was an international breakthrough for Minogue, becoming her best-selling album to date. Love at First Sight & In Your Eyes & Can't Get You Out of My Head packed the album with dance floor friendly hits. Can't Get You Out of My Head became one of the most successful singles of the 2000s, selling over five million units.

When Disco first dropped last year, Kylie became the first female artist to have a chart-topping album in the UK for five consecutive decades.

Minogue is also a film star, appearing in The Delinquents (1989), Street Fighter (1994), Moulin Rouge! (2001), Jack & Diane, Holy Motors (2012) and San Andreas (2015).

Minogue is an absolute legend, hence ahead of a special Adele Sunday Spotlight tomorrow, it's a special Saturday Spotlight edition. Kylie has had hit after hit over the years. Below is her latest version of Disco to stream along with some massive hits from yesterday.

See you again tomorrow to drive dip into Adele's 30, along with her past massive records. See you then!

Sunday Spotlight: Courtney Barnett

Courtney Melba Barnett, recently celebrated her birthday back on 3 November. Born in 1987, Barnett like me is a 80's child.

In 2017 (around this same time) I featured Barnett following a release of a spilt album with Kurt Vile. Four years later, a pandemic, Trump, a lot has changed. It's also the third last weekly Sunday Spotlight.

So let's dig into an Australian legend, Courtney Barnett. Later this month Barnett is embarking on a massive North American tour (dates here) with Shamir, fellow local Julia Jacklin along with others. Oh Australia remember live music?

Known for her deadpan singing style and witty, rambling lyrics, Courtney attracted attention with the release of her debut EP I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris in 2012. International interest came with the release of her EP The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas in 2013.

Barnett's debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit was released in 2015 to widespread acclaim.

At the 2015 ARIA Music Awards, she won four awards from eight nominations. She was nominated for Best New Artist at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards and International Female Solo Artist at the 2016 Brit Awards.

Barnett released Lotta Sea Lice, a collaborative album with Kurt Vile, in 2017.

Courtney released her second album Tell Me How You Really Feel to further acclaim in 2018.

So with the third studio album Things Take Time, Take Time I truly believe we need to celebrate this national treasure. The Sunday Spotlight has championed loads of local legends. Courtney really does deserve a second stab at this feature.

Fun Facts about Courtney:

1. Her middle name comes from opera singer Nellie Melba.

2. Her mother was a ballerina.

3. When she was 16, her family moved to Hobart. She attended St Michael's Collegiate School and the Tasmanian School of Art.

4. While pursuing a music career, she worked as a pizza delivery driver.
