Sunday Spotlight: The Avalanches

The Avalanches are the lucky final Sunday Spotlight artists for 2020. It's been a real long 2020. Back in February I had a plan to bring the Sunday post back, little did I know back then, 2020 was going to get weird. In June the weekly post slowed down to make way for some 90's fun.

July 2020 got back on track with the Sunday Spotlight returning with the likes of Jessie Ware, DMA's, The Streets and Cub Sport.

From July through Spring 2020 has seen a tonne of good new music. And next month The Avalanches will give us their third studio album, We Will Always Love You.

The group formed in Melbourne in 1997. They gave us their debut album Since I Left You in 2000 then  we waited and waited for Wildflower in 2016.

Since I Left You was one of those debut albums that seemed almost impossible to follow up. I am not going to lie, Wildflower did not excite me too much, however what I have heard from We Will Always Love You, may very well be a return to form.

The new album will feature all of these folks including Sananda Maitreya, Vashti Bunyan, Blood Orange, Rivers Cuomo, Pink Siifu, Denzel Curry, Tricky, Sampa the Great, Leon Bridges, Johnny Marr, MGMT, Clypso, Neneh Cherry, Jamie xx, Kelly Moran, Cornelius, Karen O, Kurt Vile, Mick Jones, Cola Boyy, Perry Farrell, and OroƱo.

Yes literally all of them will appears in some form or another on the album due for release 11 December 2020. The album spans over 25 tracks whilst being over 70 minutes of listening pleasure. Keep an ear out for it.

Until then grab some familiar The Avalanches sounds below.

Here is hoping to a more regular Sunday Spotlight series in 2021. For the remainder of 2020 on Sundays I will bring you Summer Music Lists and other random summer features. It's time to hit the beach, let our hair down, it's been a long year, so why not deep dive into The Avalanches and celebrate their new album in a couple of Friday's time. Is it farewell or fuck off 2020? I am going for the later.

Sunday Spotlight: Something For Kate

Where do I start with Something for Kate? I grew up listening to the three piece in the late 90's around the time Beautiful Sharks (1999) was becoming a hit.

Something for Kate are Paul Dempsey, Clint Hyndman and Stephanie Ashworth. Hailing from Melbourne the three piece have just released their seventh studio album. The Modern Medieval was released on Friday following the singles Situation Room, Waste Our Breath, Supercomputer andCome Back Before I Come Back to My Sense.

The group have received a total of 11 nominations for ARIA Music Awards in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Being ARIA's month, will they receive some nominations for this record in 2021?

Something for Kate have been an iconic fixture on many Australian music festival line ups as well as Hottest 100's.

The group have so many hits under the belt whilst Paul Dempsey solo also goes alright. So if you have been living under a rock for the past few decades it's time to meet Something for Kate. Maybe one of Melbourne's most loved Australian indie groups. Happy Sunday.

Album of the Year Nomination #5 - BENEE - Hey u x

There was a large gap in Album of The Year when I announced Disclosure back in early September, however someone across the ditch has just released an album that is so damn good. BENEE has finally delivered her delicious debut album, Hey u x.

Like Disclosure last month, BENEE has recruited a heap of great guests on her debut album. From Lily Allen to Aussie Mallrat.

The 13 track album clocks up at just under a sweet 45 minutes. You would be familiar with a number of the tunes like Supalonely (also featured on her 2019 EP Stella & Steve), Snail, Kool, Plain and Night Garden. Whilst my favourite cut thus far is Sheesh featuring Grimes.

The album landed on Friday and already I've had it on high rotation. I'm so happy the album has given us some joy at the end of 2020.

So BENEE joins Tame Impala, Halsey, The Weeknd and Disclosure in the race for the 2020 Album of the Year. Here are the album music videos thus far to get you all excited.

Not long now till the album of 2020 is revealed. Next month one of these stellar records will be your album of the year!

Sunday Spotlight: Lime Cordiale

So originally, I was planning to feature Dominic Richard Harrison AKA Yungblud (stylized as YUNGBLUD). However...

His second studio album, Weird!, was originally to be released on 13 November 2020. However it has been pushed back to 4 December 2020. Why? Apparently Yungblud cares about CD's for his fans still. The album is now due to be released 4 December, following the lengthy process of making physical copies of the album during the COVID Pandemic

So local heroes from July's feature album 14 Steps To A Better You have come in as a really outstanding replacement!

So lets welcome Lime Cordiale to the Sunday Spotlight club!

So Friday we saw the duo release a relapse version of the record. The Northern Beaches duo are also up for the most ARIA's in 2020, 8 big fat nominations, including for best cover art as seen above.

The ARIA Awards are just around the corner on 25 November, crowd-less at the Star Casino.

2020 has seen a bunch of artists re-releasing albums with new edition tracks. Hermitude also just dropped some new tracks on their 2019 record as an example.

Lime Cordiale consists of brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach, the group hit the ground running in 2009 and released their debut studio album Permanent Vacation in 2017. Oli and Louis have performed at Groovin' the Moo and South by Southwest.

So after releasing the album originally ahead of my birthday all the way back in July the boys have done really well for themselves. Earning a pile of songs on the radio, ARIA Award nominations and a J Award.

So if you are a newcomer to Lime Cordiale, get amongst them now. Happy Sunday.

Sunday Spotlight: Dizzee Rascal

Dylan Kwabena Mills is Dizzee Rascal, today's Sunday Spotlight, it's November 8th and Donald Trump better use this to soundtrack packing his bags from the White House.

It's a big news day, its a day to celebrate and the British MC, rapper, songwriter and record producer has given us so many hits over the years to help celebrate this moment. 2020 has been a punish times feel like they are changing, Dizzee has constantly been a genre game changer. Jumping from grime music toUK garage, bassline, British hip hop, and R&B.

Dizzee Rascal released his dƩbut album Boy in da Corner in 2003. This won the 2003 Mercury Prize, following albums Showtime, Maths + English, and Tongue n' Cheek all continued Dizzee's musical domination.

Since Tongue n' Cheek in 2009, Dizzee has given us three more albums, The Fifth, Raskit and last Friday E3 AF.

Dizzee Rascal has also worked with a number of big names over the years. From Basement Jaxx to Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris and even Cheryl Cole.

I was lucky enough to see Dizzee Rascal early in his career live in Vancouver back in 2003/2004. His energy was electric and I will always remember that moment.

Today let's dance, shake it off and look to 2021, things are on the rise. Dylan Kwabena Mills can help provide that soundtrack. Until next week.

Not the world's biggest week of new releases following last weeks bumper week. However we have a few new local releases including Queen Kylie with her very own Disco record. Let's get amongst this weeks best new music!

LANKS is here with SPIRITS PT.1 with PT.2 to come early 2021.

Little Mix were created on the UK X Factor, they are taking on Kylie for the biggest pop release of the week with Confetti.

Kylie Minogue slayed on  Zan Rowe's Take Five over on Double J yesterday. She also released her latest album, Disco. I have to say this is some of Kylie's best work in years. Following the rather average Golden country/pop era. Kylie is back where she belongs on a sequin filled dance floor. Go get it girl.

We have two new EPs this week too. Best news is both are local. Josh Pyke has worked with Elena Stone on his Revisions 2020 EP whilst Ninajirachi & Kota Banks have teamed up for the True North EP.

Josh Pyke – Revisions 2020

Ninajirachi & Kota Banks – True North

Now to this weeks big singles. From Missy Higgins loving Melbourne to WAAX and Illy teaming up for a big tune. Also Thelma Plum has re-released her awesome Better in Blak release with a new tune to boot.

Didirri – It’s The Season

DOOLIE feat. PNK FME – My Cue To Leave

Illy feat. Waax – Cheap Seats
