Number 34 - The Vines - Highly Evolved (2002) - Best Australian albums of the 80's-NOW!

Highly Evolved was the debut studio album by The Vines. This is also album number 34 in my Best Australian albums of the 80's-NOW!

The top 30 is so close now!

Released one day before my birthday back on 14 July 2002.

Highly Evolved was an immensely popular debut, part of a trend towards garage rock revival bands known as much for the relentless hype from the UK music press as for their music.

The debut single, Highly Evolved, was chosen as Single of the Week by influential British music magazine NME.

The magazine also voted it the 2nd best album of the year in 2002. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Highly Evolved was recorded and mixed at The Sound Factory and Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, California. It was recorded between July 2001 and February 2002.

The album sold in excess of 70,000 copies in Australia whilst in the UK over 100,000 copies while in the USA the album sold over 500,000 copies!

The album was Sydney rock at its best. The Vines (well now just Craig Nicholls) have gone onto releases seven records to date.

Will there be more rock in the remainder of the countdown? Scroll down to January's posts for the answer or come back for more random album posts across the coming weeks. Number one featured on Anzac Day!
